Alfredo Zarazaga´s ¨Portraits of the Inhabitants of the Corral¨ exhibition is a metaphor of a global problem from a local point of view.

Alfredo lives in front of Chipiona´s dune cord, which is the only thing that separates him from one of the beaches with a fishing ¨Corral¨ that remains on the coast of Cadiz, bathed by the Atlantic.

Alfredo presents us with portraits of the inhabitants of the fishing ¨Corral¨, small beings that day by day are disappearing due to the abuse of the planet. Shrimp, crabs and many sea creatures he carefully observes and then, on etching paper, with his paints, gives them a watery texture to complete each portrait.

With these portraits Alfredo would like to give their due importance to all sea creatures, no matter how small, as they are part of this EVERYTHING of which we all form part. They represent traces of natural richness and the sustenance that once were.

His work always transmits the same concept: We belong to an EVERYTHING. Analyzing this concept, it is the result of his journey, using different materials and techniques (sculpture, paint, drawings and carvings) and using recycled materials, which allows him to use something that has been discarded or thrown away and give it a second opportunity, transforming them into unique ¨objects¨ with a different meaning than their ¨previous¨ lives.

Alfredo tells us:

¨I think we give very few second chances. Working with recycled materials allows me to reuse something discarded and give it a second chance, turning it into a unique ¨piece¨ with a different meaning from its previous life.

At the same time he tackles the very real issue of overproduction, the excess of consumption. This single use lifestyle that we are living, finishing off the world´s natural resources and producing tons of waste every day. To think that this will not effect the planet as a whole, is a mistake we are already dealing with.

To study the material, its nature, its physical abilities, limits, the sensation it transmits, to know where it came from or who owned it beforehand, creates a dialogue that almost turns the experience into a game. A game of investigation, a meeting and a falling out, of surprise and distrust, in order to mold the ¨object¨ exactly right, no less no more. To see that it no longer needs us to ¨work¨ for its-self, is very rewarding. ¨
